Of course Native Americans lived here very comfortable in the Puget Sound area for centuries piror to the arrival of settlers. Settlers arrived around the mid 1800’s. The economy was that of logging and the timber industry like most of the area. The timber industry sent most of the product out to the state of California.
Ever wonder where the name Bremerton came from? Well in 1888 a German immigrant named William Bremer from a very welathy German banking family who had settled in Seattle traveled by a boat from Seattle and purchased the land that is now Bremerton from a local logger.
Mr. Bremer was a very astute business man and in 1891 he negotiated a deal with Lt. A.B. Wyckoff (seen that street huh?) to sell about 190 acres to the U.S. Navy so they could construct the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Bremer then platted the town around the Navy’s property and gave it his name. He opened businesses in Bremerton to help support the Navy’s activities.
The City of Bremerton was incorporated in 1901.
The Bremerton Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 1928 with William Gates, Sr., grandfather of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, as its treasurer.
During World War I and II, when more than 40,000 workers arrived to work at the Shipyard.
